Around thirty oils from all over Spain have participated in the final tasting of the 10th AOVE Pedro León Mellado Quality Contest, organized by the Consorcio Feria del Olivo de Montoro in collaboration with AEMO and the Patrimonio Comunal Olivarero.

According to the expert jury, the level of the oils presented was very high, with juices that showed a set of varied flavours and smells typical of the diversity of the different origins and varieties.

The selection procedure – as the bases indicate – has been the previous selection of finalists in green and ripe fruit by a panel of experts. The experts who participated in this edition were José Alba, Lola Peña, Liviu Ardelean, Rafael Félix Torres, Salvador Cubero, Antonio Mazuelas, Antonio Lorente, Juan Carlos Hidalgo and José Mª Penco, acting as secretary.

PRIZES IN GREEN FRUITINESS:

FIRST GREEN FRUIT PRIZE: to the cooperative company S.C.A. SAN VICENTE DE MOGÓN, from Villacarrillo (Jaén), which sells under the brand name PUERTA DE LAS VILLAS.

The oil surprises in nose with high intensity of fruity fruity green and fresh olives, green of freshly cut grass, with notes of hawthorn, tomato, artichoke and green banana peel. In the mouth the oil comes in fluid with a spicy and bitter balanced and of medium intensity. Finally, it culminates with a retronasal aroma of green almond and wild herbs. In short, a very complex oil.

SECOND GREEN FRUIT PRIZE: to the company ALMAZARA DE MUELA, from Priego de Córdoba, which sells under the brand VENTA DEL BARÓN

Juice with intense fruitiness of green olives, presenting clear notes of green grass and olive leaf among other herbaceous notes. The green banana and artichoke also stand out on the nose. In the mouth the oil enters sweet and soft at the same time, with a moderate bitterness and a more intense itching that appears in progression. Of great complexity as a whole and with a high persistence…

THIRD GREEN FRUIT PRIZE: to the cooperative company ALMAZARAS DE LA SUBBÉTICA SCA, from Carcabuey, which sells under the brand name PARQUEOLIVA SERIE ORO.

Juice with very intense fruitiness of green olives, presenting clear notes of green grass, olive leaf and vegetable garden aromas highlighting the tomato plant and artichoke, with notes of wild herbs and scrub. In the mouth the oil enters fluid and sweet, and then presents a moderate bitterness and a more intense itching that appears in progression. Of great complexity, elegance and harmony as a whole.

AWARDS IN RIPE FRUIT:

FIRST MATURE FRUIT PRIZE: to the company MOLINO DEL GENIL, S.L. de Écija (Seville), which it sells under the brand name MOLINO DEL GENIL PREMIUM ARBEQUINA

Elegant oil with medium fruitiness and ripe olives wrapped in some fresh notes. It has fruity aromas of banana, apple, almond and artichoke vegetables. Its entry into the mouth is very sweet and fluid, followed by a balanced and slightly bitter and spicy, and culminates with a good persistence. Harmonic oil, complex and full of nuances.

SECOND PRIZE FOR MATURE FRUIT: to the company HENRI MOR, S.L. of Juncosa (Lleida), which sells under the brand name HENRI MOR RESERVA PRIVADA ARBEQUINA

Medium light fruity oil of ripe olives, with a fruity blend reminiscent of fruit salad with notes of apple, pear and banana. It also has the aroma of cinnamon, vanilla and mint. In the mouth it has a sweet and soft entry, bitter and slightly itchy and ends with a pleasant aftertaste of almonds.

THIRD PRIZE FOR MATURE FRUIT: to the cooperative company OLIVARERA DE CASARICHE S.C.A. of Casariche (Seville), which sells under the brand name OLEOESTEPA

Medium fruity oil with ripe olives, with an aroma of a mixture of ripe fruits such as banana and apple, reminiscent of a healthy and fresh children’s puree. In the mouth it has a sweet and soft entry, bitter and slightly itchy and ends with a pleasant aftertaste of almonds.

On the other hand, as the bases indicate, a final recognition has been granted as:

SPECIAL PRIZE FOR THE BEST EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL OF THE PROTECTED DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN MONTORO-ADAMUZ:

OILS PRIETO REINA S.L. de Montoro (Córdoba), which sells under the brand name PAGO LAS MONJAS

Elegant oil with intense fruity green olives with a variety of vegetable and fruit notes including freshly cut grass, artichoke, tomato and green apple.

In the mouth the oil enters brave but tamed at the same time, with a medium and balanced spiciness and bitterness and finally its aftertaste reminiscent of the alloza. Oil with a lot of personality and body.

The awards ceremony will be next Friday, May 18 at 20:00 hours in the Assembly Hall of the Olive Community Heritage as part of the Closing Ceremony of the Fair.
